💚 Why You'll Love This Recipe

These yummy and super-easy homemade tortilla bowls are a great way to upgrade your next meal! Simple to make using a muffin tin and so versatile, these bowls are perfect for taco fix-ins, taco salad shells, or fajita filling.

Some people like to use the space between the muffin cups, which produces a very pretty, curvy, and more structured cup. I like to drape them over the top because it give me a wider base to fill and the cups all come out looking somewhat different!

And for another fun recipe with a crispy homemade shell, try these Wonton Cheeseburger Cups as an appetizer for fun handheld main course!

    🧂 Ingredients Needed

Side angled shot of ingredients - corn tortillas, salt, and cooking oil spray.
With only 3 simple ingredients, these homemade tortilla bowls are super fun and easy to prepare!
    • corn tortillas - various sizes of tortillas can be used to achieve different sized bowls, but I recommend using corn tortillas over flour.
    • cooking spray - ensures the tortilla bowls get nice and crispy in the oven.
    • salt - provides a bit of extra base flavor.

    🔪 Instructions

A four panel grid of process shots - microwaving tortillas in a damp paper towel, oiling and salting tortillas, and baking in the oven on an upside down muffin tin.
Ready in less than 15 minutes, cook these tortilla bowls while you prepare your taco filling ingredients!
    1. Wrap corn tortillas in damp paper towels and microwave for 30 to 45 seconds to soften.
    2. Spray tortillas with cooking spray and add salt.
    3. Drape the tortillas over the underside of a muffin tin to form a bowl shape.
    4. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes at 375 degrees F until the tortillas are crispy and golden brown.

    ❔ FAQs

Are corn tortillas healthier than flour tortillas?

Compared to flour tortillas, most corn tortillas tend to have higher nutritional value. Corn tortillas are higher in fiber and made from whole grain ingredients while also being lower in carbs, sodium, and calories.

    Are corn tortillas keto friendly?

Most are not, as authentic corn tortillas are made from corn flour. A low-carb flour can be used to make homemade corn tortillas for a keto-friendly option.

Can you make tortilla chips from corn tortillas?

Yes! You'll find that these edible bowls are similar to tortilla chips in terms of flavor and crunchy texture. To make your own tortilla chips, cut up corn tortillas into triangles and either spray with oil and bake or deep fry until crispy.

For a fun dinner ready in no time, make these homemade tortilla bowls with only three ingredients!

    💭 Expert Tips and Tricks

    • You can also lightly brush each tortilla with oil and then sprinkle with salt.
    • The salt is an optional ingredient an can be omitted to reduce sodium content.

📌 Use this recipes to make homemade taco bowls and add a fun twist to your next Taco Tuesday dinner! A great way to let the family customize their own meal.

    💡 Substitutions and Variations

    • Flour tortillas can be used instead of corn if you prefer.
    • Feel free to add additional seasonings to your tortillas before baking in order to create a more flavorful tortilla bowl. Add cumin, chili powder, onion powder, garlic salt, paprika, oregano, and more! You can even dust them with some taco seasoning.
    • Need ideas for what to fill your tortilla bowls with? Try ground beef, black beans or pinto beans, sour cream, green onion, shredded lettuce, cheddar cheese, black olives, red onion, pico de gallo or an organic salsa, or any other taco toppings you can think of!

    🥫 Storage and Reheating

Leftover tortilla bowls can be stored in an airtight container in the pantry or out on your counter. You can serve them right from the container, or to heat them up again, pop them in the oven at 350 degrees F for about five minutes.

What a great idea. I've had the bowls at restaurants but never thought of doing it myself because I don't have a deep fryer. Your technique is brilliant.
