How cool would it be to have someone else plan meals for you, do all the shopping and measuring, and then let you have at it to cook the meal fresh yourself? I can tell you how cool it would be…it would be super-amazingly-brilliant cool! You get to have all the fun with none of the work. Woohoo!
It is a great concept, but I have to admit that, when I received an email from the fine folks at HomeChef.com (formerly RelishedFoods.com) offering me the opportunity to sample their service, I was a little skeptical. Really? They were going to send me the ingredients for three meals that would be as fresh as what I could buy myself at the supermarket?
But I agreed to try the service, partly because the planning and shopping have always been my biggest impediments to cooking fresh, healthy meals for my family. Sometimes it is lack of time, sometimes it is lack of energy, many times it is a little bit of both, but any way you look at it, the thought having someone do all that work for me sounded really good! If that sounds good to you too, then read on!
My shipment finally arrived and immediately I was impressed at the careful packaging that kept everything cool and fresh. As I removed the ingredients from the box, I noted that everything was clearly labeled so that I knew what it was and for which meal it was intended. Almost every ingredient needed for the recipes was provided, including butter and sugar! The only ingredients I supplied were salt, pepper, and a bit of oil. Everything was also pre-measured, so I didn’t have have to use and subsequently wash my measuring spoons and cups.
So let’s talk about fresh for a minute, shall we? I was AMAZED at how fresh and delicious everything looked, especially the produce! I truly do not think I could find it in the grocery store any fresher than what arrived in my package. Below are some pictures so you can see. The bok choy in particular looked like it had just come in from the fields! The parsley and cilantro were not wilted in the least. In fact, I was not able to actually prepare the dishes for a couple of days because I had out-of-town guests staying and we had other plans for our meals, but even a few days later the produce remained very fresh looking.
The instructions included were very clear and easy to follow, and all three meals were quick to prepare (30 minutes or less). And then it was time for the final test – the tasting! WOWOWOWOW! All three dishes were so flavorful and delicious! And they each had something special to offer.
For example, the Turkey Burger was not just a turkey burger. It also included homemade pickled onions (I never knew it was so easy and quick to pickle onions!) and smoked cheddar cheese slices, and was served on a pretzel bun. Plus, it came with a sweet potato which was used to make sweet potato fries! The whole family loved this one (although the kids skipped the pickled onions…which meant more for me and DH! Yay!)
The Wedge Salad featured bacon and walnuts and gorgonzola dressing made fresh. So tasty and so easy! And the head of lettuce provided was crisp and delicious!
And I can’t say enough good things about the Sambal Glazed Salmon. That dish included roasted bok choy and wasabi whipped potatoes. It was amazingly flavorful and looked so pretty when served using the plating instructions provided. We felt like we were eating in a fancy restaurant!
